Our Long Dark Int'l Migraine: Maddy Albright on the Road for Hillary

Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 08:10:30 AM PDT

Madeleine Albright was here in Kutztown, PA to speak at Kutztown University on behalf of Hillary this morning on what seems like it was short notice.

Gorgeous spring day with the first flash of beaming yellow daffodils showing their pretty faces & flirty breezes with a hint of warmth. Pale blue sky tangled with clouds - almost a sense of Hope® or Change © in the air by the artist formerly known as spring ™... Plenty of news media about interviewing students before & after.

A very fractious, talkative crowd of about 200 housed in the nice, modern student union building with a good PA system. A nice mix of students and people from the wider community & looked fairly representative of the area & the students, started about a half hour later than stated.

Sprinkles, please!

The Clintons are pushing this meme "the claim that Latinos won't vote for blacks" - or, big/little media is pushing this claim?

"Become the media..." hmmm.

Why is this place seeming to become what it purports to loathe? LONG on opinion, SHORT on facts. Punditry of punditry, accusation after accusation.

Turley asserts leadership "promised" not to impeach

Wed Nov 28, 2007 at 10:09:35 AM PDT

On KO last night Jonathan Turley came right out & said:

"...Because it is rather clear that what the President ordered was a Federal crime. Clearly defined in Federal law. But that causes a problem. Because many of the Democratic leaders and the Republican leaders have promised each other that they would not start impeachment proceedings. But when a Federal judge says the President committed a crime, it's pretty darn hard to ignore that."

(this Jonathan Turley  appearance is up here at the indispensable Crooks&Liars...),

Open secret, I suppose... I just can't recall hearing a public figure state it so baldly, right there for all to see.

City of Big Shoulders & Party of Big Machinery

Tue Aug 07, 2007 at 04:53:41 PM PDT

CHICAGO

Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning
as a savage pitted against the wilderness,
Bareheaded,
Shoveling,
Wrecking,
Planning,
Building, breaking, rebuilding,
Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with
white teeth,
Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young
man laughs,

Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has
never lost a battle,
Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse.
and under his ribs the heart of the people,
Laughing!
Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of
Youth,
half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog
Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with
Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.

Daily Show Yearly Kos Coverage Straw Poll

Chicago has made incredible contributions to the world of comedy & entertainment with Second City & beyond.

In contemporary America, I too often feel as if I'm living in a bastardized version of Hogan's Heroes... Of course, there is one little cultural touchstone & bit of blazing samizdat culture that has soothed the soul during these long dark years... That's right. The Daily Show.

Sen. Durbin: Unacceptable "911" Comment

Thu Jan 11, 2007 at 06:45:24 AM PDT

Dear Honorable Senator Durbin,

I write to you this evening from Pennsylvania on the evening of the broadcast of George W. Bush's "Surge" speech. Though you are not my Senator, I wish only that Senators from my state someday live up to your high standard. Since the Keystone State was cursed with Rick Santorum for so long, we have some karma to work through.

I've followed you avidly if from afar & believe you are one of the true & enduring lights of the Democratic Party. If there is a Senator in Illinois who is tested enough to run for President, it is not the junior senator.
And so it sincerely pains me to be forced to address this letter to you.

Cancel Dinner, Mr. Bush--Don Sherwood is Going Down

Thu Oct 12, 2006 at 08:03:34 PM PDT

Tuesday evening I attended a local meet & greet for Fighting Dem Chris Carney headlined by Joe Biden D-DE. Carney is running for PA-10. A district currently mis-represented by the odious, oh so gerrymandered in R- Don Sherwood-whose um much, much younger mistress Cynthia Ore he once attempted to strangle in his Georgetown townhouse may be seen here which resulted in the campaign ads you can see here by Sherwood (sadly admitting to the affair & pleading for his job) and Carney's devastating ads, which we hope takes it away. Local airwaves here are all over this with lots of fighting & demands for retractions going on.

And President Bu$h is being helicoptered in next Thursday to a small college to do a measly $350 a plate private dinner fundraiser for Sherwood! That is sooooooooooooooooooo pathetic. Bush can't even crack $500! BUSH! I'm not even talking Toxic Cheney! The Decider/Uniter/Peace President/War President himself!

Shrimpboaters: you're on notice

Mon Oct 09, 2006 at 09:10:18 AM PDT

Liberty Valance: "You lookin' for trouble, Doniphon?"
Tom Doniphon: "You aimin' to help me find some?"

I'm elated to see so many rise in defense of Patrick Murphy, all the way up to a national level - this was quick action- Wes Clark doing a conference call with Philly area bloggers http://youngphillypolitics.com/node/1562 within a day or so, and I'm sure that we'll see much more by national Democratic party leaders in days to come.

In many ways this cycle might actually BE the sounds so hyperbolic "most important election of our lifetime" and - as with all these races, a handful will decide the outcome- among them quite possibly just a handful of scrappy Fighting Dems like Patrick Murphy, Chris Carney, Joe Sestak & Eric Massa. And they are ALL under similar attack, make no mistake. (as are others)

Wes Clark & the Cassandra Factor

Mon Oct 02, 2006 at 05:46:36 PM PDT

In which I attend an endorsement event where Wes Clark speaks on behalf of Joe Sestak... from Saturday. First person account with some musings. And the chance to ask Wes about the "torture legislation."

...Spotted the right place & after making the turn was behind someone in pickup truck- through my open window I heard the staffer day- I'm sorry, but you can't park here, this spot is for General Clark! heh - YES! He was late too. Parked up the block & around the corner, hustled out of my car & started walking down the block to the corner where the VFW is. A little girl on a tricycle was blocking the way & we had a sort of clumsy cute dance- I wanted to grab her up, spin her around & say HEY! The future Prez of the United States of America is about to walk right into that building over there!!! but I just smiled & kept going...

Joe Sestak PA-7 contender, live blogs 2nite @ Wes Clark's place

Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 07:29:33 AM PDT

Former 3 Star Admiral Joe Sestak will discuss his four key pillars of national security beginning at home in the health, education, economic and defense securities of our citizens. Sestak will discuss how these securities are being eroded by the policies of this Congress and Administration. He will discuss how he is running to reverse that erosion, and to help establish a new direction.

:::::: and - if you are interested but won't be attending, if you post your question or want to leave a comment, question, etc. here in this diary, then I will ask it & see if I can get a response for you & post it back here ::::::

Wes Clark Hits the Books @ UCLA, accepts renowned fellowship

Tue Sep 19, 2006 at 08:04:44 PM PDT

I so love the idea of Wes getting back into a classroom situation from time to time! And wonderfully, his son & daughter in law as well as two grandchildren live in the LA area. And since he has worked & traveled literally non-stop since stepping out of the race it seems like a great opportunity for him to sit down & formulate his thoughts -  he's been in so many extraordinary situations, been exposed to so much- I can't wait to hear what comes next.

Send in the Clowns: My Pet President 9/11 Anniversary Edition

Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 08:36:17 AM PDT

Misleadership v Leadership

There's a funny unstable feeling in the air- it's that same dizzy perfect autumn seasons changing accelerated spin & tilted sunlight feeling of Sept. 11th that we're all imprinted with forever... Something is up, up, up.... The swifties are after Ned Lamont, a major propaganda initiative that literally feels like brainwashing... because IT IS BRAINWASHING  rewriting the history of 9/11 is underway... the pieces are on the chessboard. Strange rumblings abound as we come to the fifth anniversary of the attacks that happened under Bush's watch, with Osama still on the loose- perhaps to be pulled from his den & conveniently re-introduced to the American public (so hinted a smirking Alberto Gonzales last week?) in handcuffs. Will the corporate overlords again have their set carpenters construct faux "spider holes" & so the news anchors (aka "actors") can demonstrate to us exactly how they work? Or have their knees given out by now....

w the Liar vs. Tammy the Lion

Thu Aug 31, 2006 at 11:31:35 AM PDT

The sitting pResident of the United States of America, whose military record is foggy at best, who started a pre-emptive war based on demonstrably false intelligence against a sovereign nation that did not attack us, under whose "watch" the United States of America was subject to a multi-pronged attack by mostly Saudi nationals, who most emphatically "did not" bring us the head of Osama bin Laden (so to speak) is headed to Illinois 06 to campaign against a female combat wounded helicopter pilot veteran & political neo-phyte, the amazing Tammy Duckworth.

Brzezinski: Israel's Actions in Lebanon [equal] "the Killing of Hostages"

Wed Jul 26, 2006 at 05:24:16 AM PDT

Steve Clemons has posted a partial transcript of recent remarks made by Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor to President Carter on July 20th at an event in Washington, DC. His analysis offers a sharply delineated & beautifully articulated take on developing events in the Middle East. Of particular interest to me was his assertion that Israel's actions in Lebannon essentially amount to taking hostages. The question is- could we not say the same about OUR actions in Iraq?????!!!!!! More below...
